What is a TCA peel?

A TCA peel uses trichloroacetic acid to remove the damaged outer layers of skin and trigger new collagen underneath. It reaches deeper than a Jessner, which is why it is the peel for acne scars, sun damage, melasma-type pigmentation and rough, uneven texture.

Anna applies it in controlled layers, watching for the frost that tells her the peel has reached the right depth, then stops. Strength is chosen for your skin and your downtime; a first TCA is usually kept light and built up over a series.

Who the TCA peel is for

  • Acne scars and pitted texture
  • Pigmentation and dark spots that didn't respond to lighter peels
  • Sun damage and uneven tone
  • Fine lines and rough texture
  • Skin that is no longer actively breaking out

‍

Not recommended if

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Isotretinoin in the last 6 to 12 months
  • Active acne, cold sores, eczema or open lesions
  • Sunburn, or a laser, waxing or dermaplaning treatment in the last 2 weeks
  • Darker skin tones need a patch test and 2 to 4 weeks of pre-peel prep; Anna will assess pigmentation risk first
  • A history of keloid scarring

‍

What to expect during a TCA peel in Burbank

  1. Consultation and prep. Anna checks your skin, confirms you've done the pre-peel routine, and cleanses and degreases.
  2. Application. TCA goes on in sections. It stings and heats up sharply for about a minute; a fan takes the edge off.
  3. Frost check. A white frost shows the peel has reached depth. Anna decides section by section whether to add another layer.
  4. Calm and protect. Cool compress, a healing balm and SPF.
  5. Home instructions. Written aftercare, a healing ointment recommendation and a follow-up check about a week later.

TCA Peel FAQ

How much does a TCA peel hurt?
More than a Jessner. Sharp stinging and heat for a minute or two per section, then it settles. A fan and cool air help, and Anna works in sections so you get breaks.
How long is the downtime?
About 7 to 10 days of visible peeling. Plan it for a week without events and without sun.
Will it remove my acne scars?
It softens pitted scars and evens out the surface. Deep ice-pick scars improve but don't disappear. Most clients do 3 peels and see a clear change in texture. Series pricing is below.
Can I do it if I still have active acne?
No. Clear the breakouts first with the Acne Clarifying Facial and Jessner peels, then move to TCA for the marks left behind.
Is it safe for darker skin?
With a patch test and 2 to 4 weeks of pre-peel prep, yes. The prep is what prevents post-peel pigmentation, so it isn't optional.
How should I prepare?
Stop retinol and acids 5 to 7 days before, no waxing or dermaplaning for 2 weeks, and use the prep products Anna gives you if she prescribes them.
What do I do while it's peeling?
Keep the skin moist with the healing ointment, don't pull or pick, no sweating, and stay out of the sun. New skin comes through around day 7 to 10.
