What is a Jessner peel?

A Jessner peel is a medium-depth chemical peel made from three ingredients: salicylic acid to clear oil and congestion, lactic acid to loosen dead skin and brighten, and resorcinol to boost the exfoliation. Together they reach deeper than a light peel, which is why it works on oily, acne-prone skin and the marks breakouts leave behind.

At NewskinLA it is applied in layers, with Anna watching how your skin responds to each one. More layers mean a deeper peel; for a first visit she usually keeps it conservative. Skin flakes for about a week afterward and comes back smoother, clearer and more even.

Who the Jessner peel is for

  • Oily, congested and acne-prone skin
  • Blackheads and clogged pores that facials alone don't clear
  • Post-acne marks and mild pigmentation
  • Rough texture and dull tone
  • Skin that has done a facial series and is ready for the next step

‍

Not recommended if

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding (resorcinol is not recommended)
  • Isotretinoin in the last 6 months
  • Active cold sores, eczema, rosacea flare or open lesions
  • Sunburn, or a laser or waxing treatment in the last 2 weeks
  • Darker skin tones need a patch test first; Anna will assess pigmentation risk at the consultation

What to expect during a Jessner peel in Burbank

  1. Skin check and prep. Anna reviews your skin and history and cleanses and degreases the surface.
  2. First layer. The solution goes on with a brush or gauze. You feel warmth and tingling that peaks in about a minute and settles.
  3. Additional layers. One to three more, depending on your skin's response and how deep the peel should go.
  4. Neutralize and calm. The peel self-neutralizes; a soothing balm and SPF go on before you leave.
  5. Home instructions. You leave with written aftercare and a short list of what not to use for the next week.

Jessner peel FAQ

Does a Jessner peel hurt?
It stings and feels hot for a minute or two after each layer, then settles. A fan helps. Most people rate it a 4 to 5 out of 10 for a few minutes.
How long does the peeling last?
Flaking usually starts on day 3 and finishes by day 6 or 7. It's visible, so plan it for a week without events.
How many peels will I need?
One improves texture and congestion. For post-acne marks, plan on 3 to 4 peels a month apart. Series pricing is below.
Jessner or TCA?
Jessner for oily, congested, breakout-prone skin. TCA for pigmentation, sun damage and deeper scarring on skin that is no longer breaking out. Anna will tell you which one at the consultation.
Is it safe for darker skin?
With a patch test and the right prep, yes. Skipping prep is what causes pigmentation problems, so follow the pre-peel routine Anna gives you.
Can I get it the same day as a facial?
Yes. It's the standard add-on to the Acne Clarifying Facial.
How should I prepare?
Stop retinol, acids and scrubs 3 to 5 days before. No waxing, sugaring or dermaplaning for 2 weeks. Tell Anna about any medications, especially antibiotics or isotretinoin.
