What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel applies an acid or active to the skin that removes the damaged outer layers and signals the skin to rebuild. Different peels reach different depths: light peels brighten and refresh with a day or two of flaking; medium peels reach the marks, scars and pigmentation that need real resurfacing, with a week or so of visible peeling.

At NewskinLA the peel is chosen at the consultation, based on your skin, your concern and how much downtime you can take. Anna is DMK MD certified and works with peels in layers, building up over a series rather than going too deep on the first visit.

Which peel is which

  • Retinol Peel: dullness, early aging, minimal downtime (3 to 5 days of light flaking)
  • Lightening Peel: pigmentation and uneven tone on sensitive skin
  • Organic Green Peel: herbal resurfacing for texture and congestion with light downtime
  • Jessner Peel (Acne Peel): oily, congested, acne-prone skin and post-acne marks (5 to 7 days)
  • TCA Peel: acne scars, sun damage and stubborn pigmentation (7 to 10 days)

‍

Not recommended if

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding (most peels are not recommended; Anna will advise)
  • Isotretinoin in the last 6 months
  • Active cold sores, eczema, open lesions or sunburn
  • A laser, waxing or dermaplaning treatment in the last 2 weeks
  • Darker skin tones need a patch test and pre-peel prep for medium peels

‍

What to expect from a peel at NewskinLA

  1. Consultation. Skin check, history, and a conversation about your downtime. This decides the peel.
  2. Prep. Cleanse and degrease. For medium peels, a home prep routine for 2 to 4 weeks first.
  3. Application. In layers, with Anna watching the skin's response.
  4. Calm and protect. Neutralize where needed, soothing balm, SPF.
  5. Aftercare. Written instructions, and a series plan if the concern needs one.

Chemical peel FAQ

Which peel is right for me?
Dull or early aging: Retinol. Oily, congested or acne-prone: Jessner. Scars, sun damage, stubborn pigmentation: TCA. Anna confirms at the consultation.
How much downtime?
Retinol 3 to 5 days of light flaking, Jessner 5 to 7 days, TCA 7 to 10 days of real peeling. Book around your calendar.
Do peels hurt?
Retinol barely tingles. Jessner stings and heats for a minute per layer. TCA is sharper for a minute or two per section. All are tolerable and Anna works in sections.
Are peels safe for darker skin?
Yes with the right peel, a patch test and pre-peel prep. Skipping prep is what causes pigmentation problems, so Anna doesn't skip it.
Can I get a peel with a facial?
Light peels, yes, the same day. Medium peels are booked on their own.
How often can I peel?
Light peels monthly. Medium peels every 4 to 6 weeks in a series of 3, then maintenance.
